Heavy fire that was declared arson damaged an historic building in downtown Greenwich displacing residents and businesses.

A fire in a historic building on Main Street in Greenwich was declared arson after it caused heavy damage and impacted residents and businesses.

A man staying with a friend in a second-floor apartment started the fire Sunday morning, and then jumped out of the building and ran away, according to WNYT 13.

The suspect was later located by law enforcement officials and charged him with second-degree arson, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment.

The building at 126 Main St. was built in 1892 and had won a historic preservation award. It will likely need to be torn down, according to the Greenwich fire chief.
